Job/Person Summary

Student Support Worker
Starting in September 2017

Are you committed and passionate about making a difference to the life chances of our students?  Are you looking for an interesting, varied and challenging opportunity?

We are seeking a Student Support Worker to join our team.  To excel in this role you will need excellent interpersonal skills, resilience and determination but most of all an ability to form highly effective working relationships with our students so that you can positively influence their behavioural choices.

Forming a team of two under the direction of our Student Support Manager, you will be both pro-active and responsive to our pupils’ needs.  On a daily and weekly basis you will review all the available data about students’ conduct and progress, taking steps to adjust timetables, remove hot spots and to anticipate and resolve predictable potential triggers to poor behaviour.  During the working day, your team will be responsive to pupils’ behaviour in and around the school site, in and out of lessons, to support staff as required with incidents as they occur.  The role will include mentoring as a primary strategy to positively influence pupils’ decision making and behavioural choices over time.  You will have a central base to work from but the role is all about supporting students back into class as quickly as possible so that they can continue learning; we do not anticipate that students will need to be working with you for an extended period of time on any one day.

You will benefit from extensive training and support from the Student Support Manager, a highly experienced senior teacher, and our wider staff team.  In addition, training will be provided in Therapeutic Management of Violence and Aggression (TMVA) by the nationally recognised General Services Association (GSA)

This new role arises from the growth of the school, and the desire to add additional capacity to our team so that we can maintain our typically very high standards of teaching, learning, pastoral support and intervention.

Northfield is a Special School for pupils with specific difficulties; pupils are placed here because they have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties that prevent them from making good progress in a mainstream setting.  In general, the behaviour of our pupils is excellent and is always well managed by our staff, but individual pupils can be challenging at times.  The successful applicant will always remain calm and in control, regardless of a pupil’s presentation, with an ability to assess, manage and take action as necessary so that a situation is deescalated and resolved as quickly as possible.

We will welcome your application if you are:
  • Able to excel in challenging circumstances
  • Calm and in control at all times
  • Self-confident, personable and at ease in the company of adolescent boys
  • Have a career history that demonstrates these characterises in any context, ideally in education but potentially from a background of uniformed services, armed forces or similar
Visits to the school are welcomed and encouraged.  This is a small and highly specialist school with loyal and dedicated staff.  We are proud of our school, and of the education and opportunities that we provide for our pupils.  You will play a critical part of a strong teaching community that will value your contribution to the school.

Application Procedure
Northfield School and the Local Authority are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this commitment.

All successful candidates will be subject to Disclosure and Barring Service checks along with other relevant employment checks prior to commencement of this post.

Completed application forms (CLICK HERE) should be emailed to jobs@northfieldschool.co.uk by noon on Thursday 13th July 2017 (Noon).
