Physical Education is a fundamental part of any child’s development and we are dedicated to ensuring that pupils at Northfield are given the very best opportunities.

The department creates a positive and enjoyable environment, where students feel safe and learning is the main priority.

Pupils take part in a wide variety of sports and activities during their PE lessons and Fitness sessions all of which are led by a highly qualified, enthusiastic and motivated team of specialists.

We are incredibly keen to introduce new sports and activities to keep Physical Education at Northfield fresh and exciting to ensure that every pupil is able to make progress and have fun.

Our curriculum is designed around our pupils needs to insure they are able to achieve in line with their ability.

“PE develops pupils’ competence and confidence to take part in a wide range of physical activities both in and out of school. A high quality and varied curriculum enables pupils to enjoy and succeed in many different sporting activities.”

We are constantly looking to challenge our pupils to push their own boundaries and explore their own abilities, we encourage pupils to reflect on their own and others performances and discover ways to improve them.

Our aim is to ‘teach students to enjoy physical activity and enable them to achieve their potential in sport.’ We value every child and encourage participation in every activity regardless of ability. By offering a wide range of activities we hope to capture the student’s interest and imagination and offer them a chance to expand the curriculum with their own ideas.

What we offer:

Our year 6 pupils all take part in a full school year of swimming instructed by a fully qualified swimming instructor and overseen by qualified lifeguards; we believe that swimming is a vital part of a child’s development and an important life skill keeping our children safe away from school and home. Swimming allows pupils to access trips which incorporate water based activities later in their schooling.

All of our pupils have one session of fitness timetabled into their weekly routine based in our purpose made fitness suite which offers machine weights, cardio vascular exercise machines and a fully functional free weights area for the older pupils to utilise as a part of their GCSE programme. All of the PE department are fully trained to set training programmes and teach lessons within a gym setting, pupils are able to have a say in the way they use the fitness suite and can request their very own sports specific programme or a programme entirely for personal gain.

In years 10 and 11 our pupils embark on a GCSE PE long or short course focussing on how the body functions, reasons for taking part in sporting activities, how the foods we eat affect our body and much more. These lessons will be classroom based and pupils will be expected to put the same amount of effort into these lessons as they do in their physical sessions.

We are always looking for ways to help pupils succeed at Northfield and with this in mind we offer full kit supplied and washed by the PE department every day for anyone who requires it, kit consists of black or blue shorts with a plain white or plain black t-shirt for indoor sports and long sleeve black jumper for outdoor sports in the winter. We supply football boots but are limited on numbers of pairs so pupils are asked to bring football boots for football or trainers for indoor sports.

After many years offering the usual sporting activities we decided it was time to push our department to the next level and offer some new activities which pupils would not normally take part in, our first alternative activity was downhill mountain biking which was a huge success and will be running again in the future. After a suggestion from a pupil we introduced archery into the curriculum and the pupils took to it amazingly showing maturity and respect for the sport.

With the approach of the London Olympics in 2012 we wanted to try something revolutionary within the school setting and after much deliberation we introduced Air Rifle target shooting, this sport opens many doors offering the pupils the chance to compete in postal competitions with young people across the UK and Europe. Pupils are also able to gain a youth proficiency scheme award in air rifle target shooting.
