Mathematics forms an essential part of the curriculum at Northfield School.  At key stage 2 and 3 students participate in daily one hour lessons.  At Key Stage 4 students participate in four one hour lessons a week. Lessons take place in classrooms equipped with interactive whiteboards and a wide range of resources.  One lesson a week is taught in one of our ICT rooms where students access the ‘MyMaths’ learning platform.

The Mathematics Department aims to encourage all learners to enjoy Mathematics and motivate them to extend their understanding, develop mental skills applicable to real life situations, develop problem solving skills, and help learners to hypothesise, calculate and communicate their solutions in a variety of forms.

In Years 6, 7, 8 and 9 lessons follow the Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 Mathematics framework covering work in six areas of Mathematics;
  • Number
  • Algebra,
  • Geometry and Measure
  • Statistics
  • Ratio,
  • Probability and Rates of Change and Probability.
Students experience a wide variety of activities throughout each term and they are assessed in class on a day to day basis, termly assessments and investigations. This ongoing individual assessment aids differentiation and the planning of future schemes of work.

In Years 10 and 11 students follow the Edexcel linear GCSE course, and much like Key Stage 3, learners in Years 10 and 11 experience a variety of lesson activities and detailed personalised assessment.

Some students following a vocational course will study for Edexcel Functional Skills in Maths alongside their course.  This course focuses on the Maths required for real life and work situations.
