The English Department at Northfield School is committed to providing a rich, varied and stimulating curriculum that engages students and encourages pleasure in reading and writing and fosters deeper value in both language and literature. We aim to develop the four areas of language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Literacy is highly valued throughout the school and language for learning and literacy skills are incorporated throughout lessons in all curriculum areas.
Within the National Curriculum, literacy and language skills are developed to the highest level for each student. Learners are valued as individuals, recognising their attitudes, strengths and abilities, we plan creatively for individual success that develop skills and raise attainment in literacy, language and spoken language. Students receive additional 1-1 support in reading, spelling, and comprehension as well as planned support integrated with care into lessons.

At Key Stage 3 we deliver a skills-based curriculum utilising new technologies and modern resources to support, engage and ensure progress is made. Big Writing Adventures is a programme that develops all aspects of writing for the full range of purposes. It aims to ensure that all students develop the skills to become effective communicators, to self-evaluate and value the role of written language.

Each year class experience novel based units of study and Big Writing Adventures Units of study, thus ensuring thorough coverage of National Curriculum Programme of Study for reading, writing and spoken English. Students at Key Stage three study a variety of exciting and engaging texts including James and the Giant Peach, Friend or Foe, Holes, Stormbreaker, and Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

As students move into Key Stage 4, they are supported through the preparation for GCSE English Language and Literature. It is during this process that students are helped to become independent learners and to develop greater confidence in their skills and abilities. Students are guided and supported by carefully planned teaching, to complete a number of coursework tasks and exam preparation.
